From the Saddle: What to Expect During Your First Riding Lesson

Walking into a barn for the first time can feel exciting, inspiring, and maybe even a little intimidating.

If you've never ridden before, it's completely normal to wonder what to expect. Will the horse be huge? What should you wear? What if you've never even touched a horse before?

The good news is that every rider starts somewhere.

At Willowbrook, we welcome riders of all ages and experience levels, including those who are meeting a horse for the very first time.

Before You Ride

Your lesson begins long before you get into the saddle.

When you arrive, you'll meet your instructor, become familiar with the barn environment, and learn basic horse safety and handling practices. This is a great time to ask questions, get comfortable, and take in the experience.

There's no expectation that you'll already know what you're doing—that's what lessons are for.

Getting to Know Your Horse

At Willowbrook, every lesson begins with the horse.

Before getting into the saddle, riders learn the basics of grooming and preparing their horse for the lesson. This hands-on experience is an important part of horsemanship and helps riders build confidence, responsibility, and a connection with their horse.

Students are introduced to common grooming tools such as curry combs, brushes, hoof picks, and mane combs while learning how each plays a role in keeping horses healthy and comfortable. Riders also learn the fundamentals of tacking up, including how saddles, pads, bridles, and other equipment are used to prepare a horse for riding.

These moments often become some of our students' favorites. Grooming and caring for a horse creates trust, encourages patience, and allows riders to form a deeper connection before ever stepping into the arena.

At Willowbrook, learning to ride is about more than riding itself—it's about understanding, caring for, and building a partnership with the horse from the ground up.

Learning the Basics

Once your horse is ready, it's time to ride.

Your instructor will help you mount safely and introduce the fundamentals of riding, including posture, balance, steering, and communication with your horse. Most first lessons focus on walking and learning the basics before progressing to more advanced skills.

Every rider learns at a different pace, and that's perfectly okay. The goal of a first lesson isn't perfection—it's building confidence, developing new skills, and having fun.

More Than Just Riding

Many people are surprised by how much horseback riding engages the entire body.

Riding develops balance, coordination, posture, flexibility, and core strength while encouraging focus and mindfulness. At the same time, spending time around horses can be incredibly calming and rewarding.

Horses have a unique ability to bring us into the present moment. They teach patience, consistency, communication, and trust in ways few other activities can.

Come As You Are

You don't need special experience to begin.

You don't need to have grown up around horses.

And you certainly don't need to be a child.

Whether you're a parent enrolling your child, an adult returning to a childhood passion, or someone checking horseback riding off a lifelong bucket list, your first lesson is simply the beginning of a new adventure.

The hardest part is often taking that first step.

The rest starts when you meet the horse.

We can't wait to welcome you to Willowbrook.
